Now that Bush is out of office and Republicans are minority statues in the House Senate, more Republicans have more opportunities to run. With Obama’s public approval ratings tanking and Democrats the grunt of anger by society, this gives Republicans even more reason to run and try to advance to higher office. With no Presidential Republican figure to endorse and play power broker, the playing field is more even with conservatives moderates.
Surveys have shown overwhelming support for a ban on text messaging, but the majority of drivers says they want to continue to use their cellphones behind the wheel. That reality played into the debate on Sunday, when a coalition of state highway safety officials voted against endorsement of a cellphone ban because, as their spokesman put it, “We don’t want this to become like the speeding issue, which we’ve already lost. Everybody speeds.”.
Re “Let’s get the truth about fracking,” Column, June 10 Michael Hiltzik’s column on hydraulic fracking brought to the surface the despicable practice of energy companies maximizing profit at any price. The bottom line has no ethics and apparently neither do the company managers who try to hide the environmental impact of extracting oil and natural gas using the method Hiltzik describes. It’s almost comical that they won’t disclose the chemicals they use in fracking, obviously because these same chemicals are poisoning water supplies..
Off to Los Angeles!Then, whoosh! I was off to Los Angeles after frantically making arrangements for a couple of vacation days. It wasn’t easy explaining to my employer why I needed a day and a half vacation, immediately. Remember, I couldn’t tell them anything, it was all a secret.

My office is still receiving emails from listeners who believe NPR deliberately chose to underplay the fact that the attacks took place in a gay nightclub, and continues to do so. Mark Memmott, NPR’s standards and practices editor, told me that “like in the early hours of any event, it took awhile to figure out what to say,” as reporters scrambled to confirm numerous details about what happened. He added, “I don’t think it can be said in our coverage that we were not very clear about the nightclub.” I agree..
